New Article on Intergenerational Learning in Universities

Researchers David Rodríguez-Gómez and Diego Castro-Ceacero, members of CRiEDO, have published, together with Sheila García-Martín and Ruth Cañón-Rodríguez, the article “Intergenerational Learning in the Workplace. What About Academic Staff at Higher Education Institutions?”, an exploratory review that analyzes the role of intergenerational learning (IGL) in the university context.

The study is based on the observation that hiring and retirement policies, along with demographic changes, have led to the coexistence of multiple generations within university departments. This reality opens the door to mutual learning processes between generations, which can significantly contribute to faculty well-being and institutional development.

Through a review of 61 empirical studies, the authors find that most research on IGL in the workplace adopts qualitative approaches, but there is a clear lack of studies focused on the educational field, especially in higher education institutions. This absence contrasts with the importance of promoting IGL in universities to ensure knowledge transfer, pedagogical innovation, and generational renewal.

This article represents a significant contribution from CRiEDO to research on professional development and institutional transformation in higher education.
