On October 29th, the EdU-InA team conducted an online training session on Generative Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education, led by Amaia Arroyo Sagasta, a professor of educational technology at Mondragon Unibertsitatea.
Amaia Arroyo Sagasta, who holds a PhD in Communication and Education in Digital Environments from UNED (2017), is a professor and researcher at the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences (HUHEZI) at Mondragon Unibertsitatea. She coordinates the digitalization area of the KoLaborategia research group on Educational Technology. Recently, she published a book titled “Artificial Intelligence and Education: Building Bridges.”
This training session is part of the activities scheduled in the project as part of the research process. The aim is to align the entire interdisciplinary team with the central topic of the project, Generative AI in Higher Education, to create a space for the convergence of ideas, discussion of positions, and decision-making to guide the project with a shared team vision.
During the training session, the instructor also proposed some key bibliographic references (such as those by Sánchez and Adell or Roman) as well as guides and reports that will help in the theoretical foundation phase of data collection techniques, such as UNESCO’s framework on AI Competence for teachers and students.
The convergence of ideas in the discussion space following Dr. Arroyo’s training resulted in the following key ideas:
- We are multipliers and have an impact on future generations.
- To reduce the gaps in students’ needs/competencies required in the labor market.
- It is necessary to develop a critical perspective.
- We cannot fall into the myth of “digital natives.” We must accompany them.
- We must act out of necessity, reality, enthusiasm, future, and responsibility.
- Either we inform and train ourselves, or we have uninformed and poorly trained people.
- The complexity of the educational reality requires the formation of a responsible awareness of the possibilities of AI to improve human dignity and 21st-century society.
- Out of responsibility, because we are references to go beyond the Literacy phase.
In summary (with the help of ChatGPT), the team’s position is that “As educators, we multiply the impact on future generations, closing gaps and forming a critical perspective towards AI. We must set aside the myth of ‘digital natives’; we must accompany and train for a responsible, conscious, and transformative digital future, adapted to the demands of the labor market and 21st-century society. The educational reality demands responsibility: either we inform and train ourselves, or we perpetuate misinformation and ignorance.”
