QS Ranking rates UAB top university in Spain

The international ranking conducted by QS, which analyses 2,500 universities around the world and ranks the top 700, places UAB in first position amongst Spanish universities and at number 176 in its world ranking; an improvement of 18 points with regard to last year's edition.
The UAB occupies position 105 in academic reputation, and stands out in the areas of knowledge of Humanities (92), Social Sciences (95), Natural Sciences (106), Medicine and Life Sciences (144), and in Engineering and Technology (203).
The QS World University Rankings ® 2012/2013 was published yesterday, 11 September, on the website www.topuniversities.com, as well as in the online editions of The Guardian and the Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, and in other prestigious media channels around the globe. In addition, this year QS will make the ranking public at a meeting during the conference of the European Association of International Education (EAIE) in Dublin, which was broadcast live on the website www.iu.qs.com/dublin/.
In this year's ranking, the university MIT surpasses the universities of Cambridge and Harvard and occupies first place in the world ranking. The institution, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, rose to first place thanks to the excellent results of its citations and the proportion of students per professorship, together with the increase in the institute's international faculties.
In Spain, University of Barcelona and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid are the two universities behind UAB in the ranking. A total of nine universities improve their results, although budget cutbacks in research are noticeable in the number of citations, according to the authors of the ranking.
This is the ninth consecutive year in which QS publishes the World University Rankings ®, which has become the most consulted global comparative study of its kind. The rankings are based on four pillars: research, teaching, occupation and internationalisation. They are also based on six indicators: academic reputation, reputation amongst businesses, ratio of students per faculty, citations, internationalisation of faculties and ratio of international students. This year's rankings also took into account an opinion poll with the participation of over 46,000 lecturing staff members and 28,000 professionals, the largest opinion poll of this kind ever to be conducted.
