CRiEDO Participates in the 2nd International Congress on Capitalism and Education

Members of CRiEDO participated in the 2nd International Congress on Capitalism and Education: Digital Technologies and the Far Right, an academic event devoted to the critical analysis of current transformations in educational systems.

Held in Barcelona on 6–7 July 2026, the congress brought together researchers, educators, and education professionals to discuss the impact of economic, social, and political transformations on education.

José Luís Muñoz Moreno and Saida López, members of CRiEDO, together with CRiEDO-affiliated doctoral researchers Mar Urbistondo and Pablo Lermanda, presented two contributions related to the centre’s research lines on citizenship, participation, and educational policy.

The first contribution, “Voluntary Educational Associations as Schools of Citizenship: Youth Participation and Political Learning in Governance”, examines how scouting and community-based youth organizations become spaces for democratic learning and citizenship development. Drawing on the study of their governance dynamics, the research highlights how participation in decision-making and the assumption of responsibilities constitute meaningful opportunities for young people’s political learning.

The second contribution, “From Municipalization to New Public Education: The Dispute of Neoliberal Reforms and the Reconfiguration of Public Education in Chile”, analyzes the evolution of Chilean educational governance from the municipalization reforms introduced during the dictatorship to the establishment of the New Public Education system. The study highlights the tensions between market-oriented approaches and the protection of education as a public responsibility and a social right.

CRiEDO’s participation in this congress provided an opportunity to share research findings with national and international scholars, while contributing to ongoing debates on citizenship, educational governance, and the transformation of contemporary education systems.

Through this participation, the contributions presented reinforce CRiEDO’s research lines on education, citizenship, and educational policy, strengthening the centre’s commitment to the production and dissemination of knowledge aimed at fostering a critical understanding and improvement of educational processes.
