Municipalities and Education
Last publication about The Leading Role of Municipalities in Educational Development: Proposition for a Model and Tool for Analysis.
José Luís Muñoz and Joaquín Gairín have recently published a journal article named “The Leading Role of Municipalities in Educational Development: Proposition for a Model and Tool for Analysis” in the Iberoamerican Journal about Quality, Efficacy and Change in Education, edited by Iberoamerican Network of Research about Change and School Efficacy, with the support of the Organization of Iberomerican States.
This contribution highlights the most relevant part of Muñoz’s doctoral thesis. In that study, it is looked into some tools to diagnose the education development of municipalities promoted from Councils, digging deeply in the design and validation of a stage of educational development Model and a tool for self-assessment. These tools allow analyzing, in a contextual way, the education development of municipalities.
The creation of both model and tool rely on a field work developed with in-depth interviews, focus group with experts and the direct implementation of the Model and Tool in several local administrations. The results obtained allow to point out the importance of the confidence, dialogue and agreement for improving the implication of municipalities in education; likewise, the need and the convenience of starting, by Municipalities, wide, cross-wise and innovative educational policies to benefit the educational development at which they aspire.
Additionally, the results are related to other projects linked to education and sociocommunity development created in EDO’s framework; specifically, to “Educational Support and Strengthening in teacher’s and manager’s competences” project, which was analized the role that educational institutions play to benefit the municipality development. Also, it’s linked to IDEAS project (http://edo.uab.cat/ideas), still in process, which pursues the development of educational institutions and the community from the collaboration between both parts.
