Valorisation of Research in Social Sciences and Humanities

Professor Aleix Barrera-Corominas, together with staff from the International Projects Office of the UAB, participated on February 19 in the Workshop on the Valorisation of Multidisciplinary and SSH Research, an event organised by the European Commission with the aim of validating a new guidance model for research projects within the European framework programmes—especially those focused on Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) or involving teams from these fields—so that they can achieve real impact on society.

During the meeting, the elements addressed included the ten valorisation archetypes for Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) and the two decision trees designed to help researchers navigate the complex landscape of social impact. These archetypes represent diverse pathways, such as technology-based social solutions, social-impact entrepreneurship, or the improvement of public policies through evidence. It was emphasised that valorisation in these fields is not a linear process; rather, it requires iterative collaboration, trust-building among partners, and constant co-creation with end users to ensure that research translates into real and useful solutions.

Practical tools were also presented to facilitate this transition, including implementation checklists and guidance depending on whether the project focuses on existing results or on the desired final impact. Key success factors were identified, such as institutional support from transfer offices, alignment with policy priorities, and the need for cross-sector communication skills. These resources aim to empower researchers to maximise the social, cultural, and economic value of their work, addressing systemic challenges from a people-centred and expert-knowledge perspective.

Participation in this working space reinforces CRiEDO’s commitment to research oriented toward social transformation and to knowledge transfer beyond the academic sphere.
