Recently, a work has been published about “Processes of accreditation in higher education institutions Chile, Spain and other Latin American countries”, coordinated by PhD Martín Bris, official collaborator in EDO, and which includes contributions of other EDO members.
The book draws from the premise that any educational system all over the world needs to establish evaluation criteria about implementation, operation and results of their own system altogether as well as in every of their levels; looking after its structure, development and impact that its application might originate in a socio educational level. It is well established that this interest is widely shared in all the countries that have a demanding educational system, which also are well structured and developed, becoming one of the priorities of the Chilean education administration, at the moment immersed in a process of analysis about the application of a model previously chosen – and sometimes questioned- in which probably will conclude by changing the model itself, or at least, the development of its application. This is the reason why it is affirmed that, from the different sectors that are involved in this process, it is necessary to conduct contributions with the purpose of enrich the discussion with truthful information that will allow us to situate the topics in its fair place, opening lines of opinion about what is meant by strong points of this system and those that, from the point of view of the responsible actors for its applications, would be convenient to review.
The present work starts with a sample of the reality of the accreditation system in higher education institutions in Chile. For it, it has been used as a reference the model of assurance of the quality in this country, explaining it at the same time with the purpose of finding out how it is applied in Spain and other countries like Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and México. It is performed with the single goal of going one step forward of the mere knowledge of the system, analysing its strengths and weakness, as well as informing about the impact of the accreditation system in the key actors of higher education institutions.
