CRiEDO researchers Diego Castro-Ceacero and David Rodríguez-Gómez have published a new article in Divulga UAB, examining how the coexistence of different generations influences the dynamics of university research teams, as well as their performance and professional development.
Under the title “Generations Researching Together: How Age Diversity Drives (and Challenges) Science at University”, the article presents the preliminary findings of the COIIN project – Intergenerational Organisational Culture in Research Centres and Teams, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (PID2023-148993NB-I00).
The research is based on a large-scale survey of 1,473 university researchers, which makes it possible to examine the role of generational diversity in the functioning of scientific teams. The findings show that interaction between people of different ages and at different career stages encourages the exchange of knowledge and experience, enriches scientific work and contributes to a better working experience.
However, the study also identifies several organisational challenges. Although researchers value working with colleagues from other generations, this positive perception does not always align with the conditions provided by their institutions. In this regard, the study highlights the need to improve the internal organisation of research teams and strengthen intergenerational inclusion policies.
The findings therefore underline the importance of fostering organisational cultures that make use of age diversity as a strategic resource to promote innovation, shared learning and professional development in the university environment.
