The online Newspaper edited by Wolters Kluwer “Escuela” interviews EDO’s director, Joaquín Gairín, about several different aspects of the educational system such as: school management, LEC law, Teacher’s Statute, reforms and the current relationship between Pedagogy and School.
Regarding professional field, Gairín has talked about the importance of training not only the Director’s figure but also all members of a management team. Also, Gairín reckons that LEC law “strengthens the leadership role and settles down the bases for them [the managers] to make decisions about staff and performance of the educational center”, although he admits that this is a topic still pending to deal with and currently it’s a partial and initial proposal. Likewise, the Teacher’s Statute might be a good tool provided that it is elaborated as a general agreement and taking into account different sensitivities that are in the system; and considering that it would be ideal that Teacher’s Statute acknowledges professional career and certified competencies as well as institutional implication. Despite not taking up against economic incentives, he warns about the possibility of fracture in schools if this incentives are created based on individual models.
Regarding training field in University, his position is about “detecting dysfunctions and seek for alternatives”, such as improve work placement, instead of making global changes, because, in general, training degrees work properly. In respect of the relationship between University and educational centers, he affirms that he doesn’t believe that University is away from actual society, although it can be closer, obviously. The relationship that he proposes is about connection between theory and practice, thus teachers that need to reconceptualise some problems should turn to theory and in the same way, pedagogues should turn to schools in order to solve the problems that may occur while studying the theory.
