Doctoral Thesis Defense: The Leadership Role in Primary Schools in Catalonia

On November 26, 2025, Lorena Varo Pérez defended her doctoral thesis entitled “The Leadership Role in Primary Schools in Catalonia: Analysis of the Performance of the Management Team” at the Graduate Hall of the Faculty of Education Sciences.

The research, supervised by Dr. Carme Armengol and Dr. Cecília-Inés Suárez-Rivarola, aims to analyze the performance of the leadership role exercised by the different positions that make up the management teams of primary education schools in Catalonia. Using a sequential mixed-method design in three phases, the thesis highlights the complexity inherent in exercising leadership functions and the need for research that explicitly integrates the various roles within the management team, recognizing the specificity of their responsibilities and the interdependence of their functions in increasingly collaborative leadership. Furthermore, the findings emphasize the importance of incorporating a gender perspective in the analysis of access to leadership positions and in the consolidation of roles of responsibility.

The committee that evaluated the thesis was composed of Dr. Mireia Tintoré (Universitat Internacional de Catalunya), as chair; Dr. Diana Amber (Universidad de Jaén), as member; and Dr. Aleix Barrera-Corominas (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), as secretary.
