The BIObec project now has its website available from which to publicize its activities.

The BIObec project seeks to promote training in bioeconomy within the framework of the Horizon 2020 program. BIObec proposes a framework that merges the traditional idea of a training center with that of a knowledge node. The project will establish multi-tier Bio-Based Training Centers (BBECs) to act as knowledge nodes bridging the gaps between academic institutions, students, innovation entities and policy makers. Furthermore, BBECs are expected to be flexible enough to respond to the current and future needs of the industry and the surrounding local, regional and national ecosystem.

The consortium made up of 19 entities from 12 European countries will work together for 30 months to reduce the gap between the bio-based industry and the educational system, by connecting universities, innovation laboratories and research and development centers from different European regions. BIObec is coordinated by the University of Bologna and is made up of a multidisciplinary consortium of 19 partners from 12 countries:

  • 11 educational institutions: the Universities of Bologna, Hohenheim, Eastern Finland, Barcelona Autonomous, Wageningen, Trakia, Munster Technological, Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, the National Institute of Technology for Life, Food Sciences and environmental - AgroParisTech, the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and the Educational Research Institute (IBE);
  • An investigative body: Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche;
  • Three industry clusters from the bio-based industry: CTA, Food and Bio Cluster Denmark and Irish Bioeconomy Foundation;
  • Two SMEs: FVA and Sustainable Innovations;
  • A non-profit foundation for education and social dialogue: Pro Civis;
  • A private research institute: Research Institute for Fodder Crops, Ltd. Troubsko.

The consortium has received a total budget of 1.5 million euros in funding. It has been funded by the public-Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) initiative within the framework of the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. On the other hand, the UAB, through Cried, has received €64,331.00.
