An Organizational Proposal for the Management of Conservatories and Music Schools in Paraguay

On October 9, 2025, at the Sala de Graus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the doctoral thesis titled “Los conservatorios y escuelas de música del Paraguay, una propuesta organizativa para su gestión” was publicly defended by Juan Nicolás Samudio Bareiro.

The thesis was supervised by Dr. Carme Armengol and Dr. Cristina Mercader, researchers at CRiEDO, and the examination committee was composed of Dr. Òscar Flores (University of Lleida, president), Dr. Fernando Lara (University of Granada, member), and Dr. Anna Díaz-Vicario (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, secretary).

The study sets out three main objectives:

  1. To identify the physical environment characteristics of music education centers in Paraguay.
  2. To analyze the perceptions of teachers and administrators regarding the management of these centers.
  3. To examine the improvement proposals put forward by both groups.

Using a mixed-methods exploratory approach, the findings reveal that despite efforts to adapt spaces to the current demands of music education, significant challenges remain, particularly in terms of acoustics, spatial distribution, and accessibility for individuals with specific needs.

Additionally, there is a notable lack of libraries, auditoriums, and digital environments to support academic and administrative management. In response, the thesis proposes three key areas for improvement:

  • Implementation of instrument lending banks with a variety of instruments.
  • Adaptation and soundproofing of classrooms to ensure high-quality music teaching.
  • Provision of libraries with diverse and accessible pedagogical materials.
