We are all aware that the university sector has left the twentieth century with an identity crisis. This has been precipitated by the numerous pressures to higher education , due in large part to the great changes that affect society in general. At the tensions of a paradigm shift (University of elites 'versus' open university to all citizens ) , are added specific and related to the different contexts in which it is located. The university seeks a certain internationalization of learning and research , while claimed attend local and national interests.

Concern about college adapt to the new reality is rising and is translation that meetings to discuss the role and functioning of universities. They diagnosed the reality and present options related to greater involvement of the university with the socio - cultural and economic.

The contributions that make up this book are part of the project ACCEDES , "Access and academic success of vulnerable groups in risky environments in Latin America " ( DCI-ALA/2011/232 ) , coordinated by the Organizational Development Team Autonomous University Barcelona and actively participating in more than 30 institutions of European and Latin American area.

The Project development aligned with current educational policy response unsatisfactory reality , is thus to help promote and encourage clear and stable university policies that contribute to substantial social improvements , which is the workhorse of most current democratic societies . Unfortunately , institutions continue to reproduce inequalities and not always a factor of social cohesion . We forget in this context that institutions are social structures created in and for society and, in this respect, should do something.

The first chapter presents the design of the project and the most relevant of its development during their first year of life . The second chapter places the problem treated , trying to clarify the vocabulary , and the option approaches adopted. They are Chapters III and IV which summarizes the reports from the various countries on the transition from the University of vulnerable students , while Chapter V presents tools for the diagnosis and identification of vulnerable groups . Finally , Chapters VI , VII and VIII collect intervention strategies, references and best practices that can guide the development of intervention programs.
