This book is the fruit of a long collaborative effort between the authors C. Armengol, M. Feixas and R.M. Pallarès, who are in charge of the School Organization course at the UAB. It aims to address the basic issues of the organization and management of non-university educational centers. We believe that this contribution may be of interest simultaneously to students of the Faculty of Education Sciences and also to professionals preparing to join educational centers or practicing educators.
The first chapter, of an introductory nature “Theoretical Foundation” deals with the concept and nature of organizations in general; it places us in the field of study of school organization, to end by focusing on the educational center in the context of the school, educational and social system. The nature of all educational organizations is examined from three specific aspects: the objectives of the organization, the organizational structure and the relational system.
The chapter on “Organizational Approaches” is based on the premise that educational centers have a certain autonomy to make decisions about management and organization, and show great differences from one another depending on the characteristics of the students and families and the sociocultural context surrounding them. The second chapter deals with “Organizational Structure”, relating it to the management of people within the organization (human resources), the management of spaces and materials (material resources) and other mechanisms that link both (functional resources).
The last chapter deals with the nature and specificity of interpersonal and intergroup relations in educational centers. The way in which groups are configured, the levels of participation, the method of decision-making and conflict resolution, communication processes, the climate and culture of the center are the main aspects that configure the relational system of any educational organization.
