I International Congress Municipality and Education: experiences and challenges

Date of the scientific meeting: 20/10/2011

On October 20 and 21, 2011, the 1st International Congress on Municipality and Education: experiences and challenges will be held in Coyhaique (Chile).

The involvement of Chilean municipalities in education is historic. Born in 1980, it began with the transfer of all schools from the Ministry of Education to the municipalities as part of a decentralization process.

Currently, this decentralized management model already established seeks administrative and academic efficiency with quality goals for all the centers involved. This purpose includes the training and professional development of management teams, teaching technicians in the classroom and in the center, as well as contemplating collaboration actions with the representatives and the environment.

Thus, for years, the municipalities have been promoting various related educational and social actions and have generated a bank of experiences of great importance for the specific contexts in which they are located. However, its performance has been very contextualized and is little known outside of its reality.

The knowledge and dissemination of the experiences that the municipalities are developing regarding education is, in this regard, a necessity that can facilitate mutual enrichment, at the same time as enhancing the involvement of other municipalities in new projects. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the implemented model, possibilities and limits, philosophy and reality.
