The UAB, in the 4% of the best universities in the world according to the Scimago Institutions Ranking 2021.

The UAB rises 62 positions, occupying position number 209 among all universities worldwide, and is the second Spanish university according to the Scimago Institutions Ranking 2021.

The SCIMAGO research group has published the sixth edition of its benchmark ranking, the Scimago International Ranking (SIR). The Autonomous University of Barcelona has improved 62 positions with respect to the previous edition of the ranking and, in the 2021 edition, is in position 209 worldwide. In addition, it achieves the 32nd position in Europe and the 2nd position at the Spanish level in the global score.

SCIMAGO prepares this composite ranking analyzing different aspects of research and innovation as well as the impact that research institutions have on society. Apart from the general classification, it also classifies the institutions in three aspects: research, innovation and the impact on society. Although the ranking classifies all research institutions, regardless of their legal form, only higher education institutions have been taken into account for the analysis.

The classification highlights the evolution of the UAB in recent years in the volume, impact and quality of scientific publications, an aspect where it has jumped from position 167 in the previous edition to the current 109, after 12 years below position 159. In this way, the UAB ranks in the top 2% in the world in research and 16% in innovation (position 375), while in social impact it is among the best 3% in the world (position 119 ). Globally, it is among the 4% of the best universities.

SCIMAGO also ranks the best universities in the world from 19 knowledge areas. For an institution to have a presence in an area, it is necessary for it to exceed a minimum production threshold equivalent to twice the percentage that this area represents in the world in the last year.

In this classification, the UAB would be among the top 100 in the world in Veterinary Medicine (36), Social Sciences (69), Arts and Humanities (83) and Dentistry (98). In addition, it would be the first in Spain in 5 areas (Agricultural and Biological Sciences, Economics, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences and Veterinary) and among the three best Spanish in 11 of 19 areas.

On a global scale, the top positions in the ranking are occupied by Anglo-Saxon universities, although they are losing positions due to the entry of Asian universities. Specifically, the top 20 places are for 11 universities from the United States, 3 from the United Kingdom, 4 from China, one from Canada and one from Hong Kong.
