The Governing Council of the UAB will invest as doctor honoris causa the sociologist Manuel Castells.

Manuel Castells, professor of sociology at the Open University of Catalonia, will be invested doctor honoris causa by the UAB. The appointment has been approved at the meeting of the Governing Council that has had today in the Rectorate.

Castells is a world leader in communication sciences. According to a classification of the Social Science Citation Index, it was the most cited researcher of this academic area during the period 2000-2015. In addition to the UOC, he is a professor at the University of Southern California, professor emeritus of the University of California, Berkeley, holder of a chair at the Collège d'Études Mundiales de Paris, and has also developed his career at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid , At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at the University of Oxford, at the University of Santa Clara, at the University of Cambridge, or at the Stellenbosch Institute in South Africa, among others.

On the other hand, the line of research on Creation and Knowledge Management promoted by the EDO-UAB group is based on the paradigm on information society and knowledge promoted by Castells, where information and communication technologies (TIC) are considered the facilitators of knowledge and, consequently, the main causes of the growth of organizations and societies.
