On 21th October 2022 a new online workshop BIObec was held to stimulate debate on bioeconomy education.

This workshop also aimed to define a more integrated, connected and broader approach for the future implementation of bio-based training centers (called BBECs under the BIObec project), to explore the opportunity to transfer and replicate BBEC formats to ecosystems of additional territorial bioeconomies and involve additional members of the IRWG (Implementation and Replication Working Group). This group is essential for the future implementation of the BBECs, since it will participate in the project initiatives, providing inputs that allow its structure and operation to be specified, while at the same time facilitating the replication of the BIObec experience beyond the project.

The BIOBec project seeks to promote training in bioeconomy. It proposes a framework that merges the traditional idea of a training center with that of a knowledge node. The project will establish Bio-Based Training Centers (BBECs) at various levels to act as knowledge nodes that bridge the gap between academic institutions, students, innovation entities and policymakers. Furthermore, BBECs are expected to be flexible enough to respond to the current and future needs of the industry and the surrounding local, regional and national ecosystem.

This project is aligned with the BBI roadmap with the aim of increasing cooperation between the Bio-Industry and the educational system to avoid skills shortages in this sector. This new project gives continuity to the UrBIOfuture project, which was coordinated by EDO-UAB in the 2019-2020 period, whose purpose was to identify the existing GAP between the skills required in the bioeconomy sector and those offered in institutions vocational and university education.
