In a context of constant change in society, the higher education system, and students’ profiles and expectations, it is essential to have analytical tools that allow for an accurate understanding of the dynamics emerging in classrooms and their impact on the quality of university education. This analytical perspective should help to explore in greater depth the challenges affecting teaching and to guide institutional responses. This first report focuses on an issue of particular relevance for all universities: classroom absenteeism and the factors that condition students’ attendance and participation. Recent research highlights that university absenteeism is a complex and multicausal phenomenon that affects learning progress, motivation, academic engagement, and the overall university experience. Likewise, the available evidence shows that it cannot be interpreted as the result of a single cause, but rather as the outcome of the interaction between personal, social, organizational, institutional, economic, and educational factors that shape how students relate to the university.
