Since the nineties of the 20th century, interest in understanding more and better the university institution has been increasing, focusing especially on the process of European convergence (called the European Higher Education Area), university funding, the academic performance of students, external evaluation and accreditation systems, the relationship with the world of work, employment and the knowledge society, etc. Currently, the most worrying issue in the life of universities is the system of governance, in general terms, and management, in operational terms. This publication, “University management. An approach to the management of centers and departments”, addresses one of the most controversial topics in recent years in relation to the university world: centers (faculties) and departments. In this work – intended for pedagogues, university professors, institutional analysts and university (academic) managers – aspects such as:

  • The institutional importance and the conditions in which university management positions are exercised;
  • The relationship between the management function and those of teaching and research;
  • The problems faced by a teacher with managerial functions; and,
  • The stages of return of the management charge.
