This research responds to a demand from the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Ministry for Employment, as part of its Planes de Ocupación (Employment Plans) programme and is proposed as the continuation, in its methodological aspects, of the research done in the environmental studies in the year 1999 (see corresponding file).
The study analyses the professional profiles and training activity associated with degree courses in humanities, the aim being to learn more about ways of finding professional employment.
It uses a qualitative methodology based on the analysis of the competences and functions of humanities professionals, on the basis of a description, in order to be able to produce the professional profiles. It combines analysis based on the collection of information from in-depth interviews along with the contributions of a discussion group and theoretical analysis of the parameters of the degree course in relation with the job market.
The research is being done nine years after the Humanities Degree started with more than 300 graduates. Four interviews were conducted with experts, with 50 graduates and 95 entrepreneurs. The basic nucleus of the analysis focuses on finding the axis that relates the functions that should be performed by a humanities graduate regardless of area and/or profile and to make proposals for improvement, all of which are aimed at improving the transition into the labour market and the structure of course programmes.
